Instrumental Music PDF Print E-mail
Instrumental Music is offered as an extra-curricular activity at Forest Lake State High School. Students in the program participate in a half hour lesson per week, on a rotating timetable, and have the opportunity to participate in the schools’ many bands, including Jazz Band and Concert Band. Students are taught by visiting specialist Instrumental Instructors and have the opportunity to learn one of the following instruments:
  • Woodwind – Flute, Oboe, Clarinet (Bass Clarinet), Saxophone (Alto, Tenor and Baritone)
  • Brass – French Horn, Trumpet, Euphonium/Baritone, Trombone, Tuba
  • Percussion – tuned and un-tuned percussion
  • Strings – Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass

The Instrumental Music Program has been very successful in the short time it has been running, in 2007 there are approximately 100 students involved. The bands have won many awards, including the Best Performance by a P-12 Ensemble at Fanfare, in 2005, and Silver Medals at the Brisbane Schools Band Festival. The bands perform at many school and community functions and competitions, including the Forest Lake Village, Brisbane Bands Festival and Australian Academy of Music, and the Jazz Band performed specially for the Hon. Peter Costello (Federal Treasurer) in 2006.

Students in the Instrumental Music Program also have the opportunity to attend a music camp or tour each year. In 2007, the bands are touring to Yeppoon. The jazz band is also touring to Melbourne. In 2008, students will go on a music camp.

The fees for Instrumental Music are very low. Students pay an annual fee of $25. Fees for hiring school instruments also apply ($60 per semester).
