POD Program Achieve 2007

At FLSHS, our goal is to have students who are:
  • Achieving well
  • Socially adept
  • Behaviourally well
  • Emotionally resilient
And who:  have clear ideas about how to access a job pathway for the future.

POD Program Achieve 2007 is based on the “You Can Do It!” Education Program.

YCDI KEYS (FOUNDATIONS)
  • Getting Along
  • Organisation
  • Persistence
  • Confidence
  • Emotional Resilience
WHY?

The implementation of YCDI is a project of the Forest Lake Community of Learning (FLSHS, FLSS and GASS).  Having a common program smoothes the transition of students to our school AND continues their learning about how to become resilient and successful at school and in the future.

The YCDI Program gives students a set of valuable tools to use to help them achieve academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally.  It allows students to see and use the relationship of HAPPENINGS   THOUGHTS   FEELINGS   BEHAVIOUR to choose the best action for them.

YCDI foundations and language give teachers and students a common language in the classroom to assist students in developing their skills AND a way of reflecting and reporting on how students are achieving.

About the POD Program

POD Program Achieve 2007 incorporates other materials to provide variety and depth in areas not covered by the YCDI! Program.   In particular, careers and job pathways are addressed and dealing with bullying and conflict resolution.

In addition, each term will start with a student goal sheet.  The student will refer to this throughout the term and then use it to complete a reflection sheet at the end of the term.  This will be glued into their student journal and then stored in their folio, along with any other booklets and handouts.

Each term will end with a Reflection sheet, where students can detail their involvement and participation in school and extra-curricular activities as well as their efforts towards the goals they set at the beginning of the term.

The materials in the teacher and student booklets are not meant to exclude the teacher from using their own additional resources to provide context or meaning to the lessons.  For example, Newspaper and magazine articles, games and puzzles, and group activities along the theme of the lessons are an excellent addition.

The Term program

Each term is designed to give 8 teaching lessons for the term. Over terms 2, 3 and 4- this will be 6 lessons on the term focus and 2 for career planning. This leaves one lesson for assessment and reflection (to also assist with reporting) and possibly one or two lessons in each term to catch up or do other activities.

Using the Student POD booklet

Student booklets have been provided, with activities related to the topic for students to complete.

Using the Student POD journal

At the beginning of the program, all students will be issued with a small exercise book that will serve as their POD reflection journal.
The purpose of this journal is three fold:
a)    it allows students to write about the focus for the lesson (ie What do I know?)
b)    it allows students to reflect on the topic taught during the lesson. (ie Has this happened to me? How does it make me feel? What can I do to change the situation?). Students will be given a “starter guide” of questions to help them focus their reflections on a topic.
c)    Allow students to record their short and long term achievements and goals.

This allows students to set goals for the term, and list the goals they have achieved in pursuit of this goal. Goals may be academic, behaviour, sporting, extra- curricular or personally orientated; short term (week to week), medium term (over the term) or long term (over the year, to year 10). A guide to help students chose achievable and practical goals and to separate long and short term goals will be included in the student handouts.

Assessment in this subject

Teachers are required to assess and report on students in POD PA. This will be a single A-E rating, composed of three sentences based on student knowledge, participation and reflection.
a)    Student knowledge. This will be done via a short answer/ multiple choice exam in the 9th lesson of term to assess student’s understanding of the topics covered.
b)    Student participation. Teachers will be asked to report on student involvement in class, answering questions, completing activities and working with others based on the keys of the YCDI program.
c)    Student reflection. Teachers will be asked to assess student work from their POD journal and report on their effort in class.
