Instrumental Music

Forest Lake State High School offers an excellent Instrumental Music program for students encompassing group tuition and ensemble rehearsals.  Students have the opportunity to participate in the schools’ award-winning ensembles including Jazz Band, Concert Band, String Orchestra and DrumLine.  Students are provided with expert tuition from specialist Instrumental Music teachers.

Instruments that can be studied in the program include:

  • Woodwind – flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor and baritone)
  • Brass – French horn, trumpet, euphonium/baritone, trombone, tuba
  • Percussion – tuned and un-tuned percussion
  • Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass
The instrumental music program has been very successful and in 2015 there are approximately 150 students enrolled. The ensembles have won many awards including two golds and two silvers at Fanfare in 2014.  In 2013, the Jazz Band performed at the CQUniversity Schools’ Jazz Festival and were awarded a gold achievement as well as three individual student accolades (for outstanding vocal soloist, outstanding rhythm section player and outstanding saxophone soloist). Previous achievements include two golds, one silver and a bronze at Fanfare 2012, the Best Performance by a P-12 Ensemble at Fanfare (two consecutive years), three golds and a silver at Fanfare in 2010 and silver medals at the Brisbane Schools Band Festival. The ensembles perform at many school and community functions and competitions.  They have opportunities to work with national musicians and conductors in workshops and masterclasses.  High achieving students have opportunities to participate in extension programs such as the Queensland Conservatorium State Honours Ensemble Program, as well as Education Queensland’s Creative Generation Excellence Awards in Instrumental Music (MOST).
There are a number of performance opportunities for instrumental music students including camps, tours, school and community events such as Anzac Day ceremonies, an annual Dreamworld performance day and many more!  In 2013, students toured to Central Western Queensland joining with the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.  In 2014, students attended an intensive week long camp at the Gold Coast. The Instrumental Music program at Forest Lake SHS is a rewarding and engaging experience for all students.
