This week the school hosted its inaugural White Ribbon Exhibition Rugby League game
against Marsden SHS students.
The
school is an active supporter of the domestic violence prevention campaign, hosting
various events such as the ‘Stop the Hurting’ song writing workshop to write
the second verse of rapper Illy’s song and participating in the May Prevention Month where hundreds of
students pledged to challenge behaviours and stand up against domestic violence.
Head
of Department, Mr Cameron Webb said that the year 10 rugby league team wanted
to join this campaign challenging Marsden State High School to support White
Ribbon Day.
“Whilst
Marsden SHS won 20-4, both teams came together after the match and pledged in
front of their families, to stand up, speak out and act to prevent violence
against women, so everyone was a winner,” he said.
Forest
Lake State High School Principal, Denise Kostowski said, “This match is just
the beginning because we are committed to breaking the cycle of family and
domestic violence in our community so we intend to make this an annual event”.
White
Ribbon Day is held annually on 25 November and wearers of the white ribbon
pledge to commit to raise awareness to end domestic violence.
