Western Corridor Trade Training Centre (WesTEC)
This federally funded project is a partnership between 4 local State secondary schools - Woodcrest State College (lead school and site of the facility) and Forest Lake, Redbank Plains, and Springfield Central State High Schools.
WesTEC’s charter is to deliver high quality vocational training in identified areas of skill shortage. The Centre focuses on entry level programs in construction, engineering and automotive. To ensure quality training, best use of regional resources and acceptance of students qualifications, WCTTC schools are negotiating with Registered Training Organisations (RTOs), including local TAFE Colleges, to deliver the training. In the future, it is planned that WesTEC will operate five campuses (one at each of the participating schools) allowing students to commence vocational studies at their “home school” and then progressing to WesTEC, RTOs or the workplace to further their vocational studies.
Students accessing WesTEC have the opportunity to complete their QCE and gain a nationally recognised VET qualification. Trade students are expected to gain a Certificate 1 or 2 while in other vocational areas, Certificate 3 courses may be offered. In 2012, a contextualised year 10 “Introduction to Trade” program was developed as a lead in to future trade based programs at WesTEC. All 4 participating schools commenced delivery of this course in 2013.
