Students with additional needs

Learning support at Forest Lake State High School comes in many forms.

Firstly, teachers are required to adjust teaching and learning programs to meet the individual needs of students and groups of students within their classes. As well, the Head of Department who oversees the pod in the Junior Secondary School monitors student progress. Many teachers are available to offer assistance during lunch breaks and before and after school.

Parents of students who fall below the national benchmark in one or more areas in NAPLAN are able to apply for an exemption from LOTE (Japanese). These students participate in an intensive literacy and numeracy class. In addition to this, students in years 8, 9 and 10 may be selected to participate in Essential English and/or Essential Math classes. These subjects focus on explicit teaching of the basics.

Teacher aides often work with students supporting those with learning difficulties, disabilities, English as a Second Language and Indigenous students.

Students frequently use laptops or computers in classrooms and for assignments. Specific software programs are available to assist students with learning difficulties. iPads are also available in the Student Enrichment Centre to support student learning.
