At our annual ANZAC Assemblies we paid tribute to over 650 of our peacekeeping servicemen and women who went to Rwanda during 1994-1996 to aid the United Nations peacekeeping mission.
Our forces, comprising of medical and surgical personnel, an infantry rifle company, an armoured personnel carrier section, engineers and signallers, assisted displaced civilians in Kibeho in the South of Rwanda.
The impact on the veterans was extremely significant despite it being a peacekeeping operation, as it is considered one of the most significant human tragedies during the 20th Century.
The medical peacekeepers treated over 15,000 Rwandans, but their greatest legacy was how they helped get the country back on it's feet.
While some veteran peacekeepers struggled with the outcomes of this mission, they always knew that regardless of the high risk and often at a cost, it was the right thing to do.
